Sweet update. It's good to see an update on a build off tractor. I hope these little details your taking care of now pay off this year at Haspin.

Forum president Doug Fackler talked me into going to Haspin this year. So, with a bit less than 2 months to go, I've got some things to get ready and finish on the simplicity. A few minor changes will be or have already been made to fix some small issues that came up the last time. Here's a short video explaining a few things on the list.

Excellent update man! Still love this tractor. 1st tractor I voted for!

Haspin Prep progress report, Simplicity moved to the simplicity race team race shop. As soon as the Beetle is moved back outside, that space will be available for doing some repairs and modifications.

To Do List...

Top Priority:
-Brake bands, flip over to smooth side to prevent rocks building up, smooth sharp edges on clamps
-Air box, new foam shape and screen to hold foam in place
-Clutch brake, install/fab
-Clean out float bowl, new fuel lines and filter
-Alternator switch replace, check all switches
-Alternator belt tensioner, switch from spring to threaded adjustment
-Hood rack, paint and install
-Change oil, check tires, grease, check for loose bolts

Low Priority:
-Back up light, install
-Under hood light, install
-Mill Cylinder head, clean carbon, new gasket

For now that's what I can think of and what's important before haspin. Toggle switches and head gasket are on the way.

Thanks, I'm going to try getting some good action shots again. We'll see how things go. And see if the tired 8hp holds up for another year. Later on I want to build an I/C engine for it.

Painted the hood rack and got these modifications done to the air box. Previously I had an "open" box with a square of foam in the middle between the two studs which hold the cover on. The foam moved to where air (and dirt) was getting past the foam. I added a screen and a rod to hold a new diagonal piece of foam in the box. Now it won't be able to move and also, there is a bigger surface area for air to pass through the foam. The box isn't as big as it could be, so this should be a slight help. There is also an added air deflector which will hopefully cause some dirt to fall out of the air as it goes around the bottom of it. Still needs paint but it's done.

That’s a pretty good idea. It Kinda reminds me of the airbox in my XT 225. It just had a foam element held in place with plastic and a screen.

Thanks guys. Wish I had a better piece of screen so it would look straighter, but that's all I had of it. Doesn't matter really, no one will see it in there. I think it should work a lot better though.

Well my ideas are always stupid, but I've seen people use a clothes hanger and panti hose for an air filter in odd shaped air boxes....

What one person thinks is a dumb idea, someone else may think it's a great idea. lol, once I made an air filter from a sock over a spring. (Not saying if that was good or bad)

Some work getting done on the simplicity. Extra under hood light and spare belt holder.

That's definitely a good use of the empty space under the hood. Are you going to make a plate or something to clamp the belts in there?

Thanks! And yeah about the plate, I have an aluminum plate that fits over the bolts, just didn't have it done yet for the pic. Then the plug holder is bolted under the hood too and I added some 1/4" bolts to route the wire through to the underhood light.

The underhood light will be always on with the dash light. When you want to make carb adjustments or just check on the alternator belt, It will be nice to not have to hold a flashlight. And everything in red of course so your night vision doesn't get wrecked.

I think I'm going to have to steal that belt holder idea if you don't mind.

Wow, I'm impressed with the belt holder and spare spark plug holder. That's pretty neat. It's pretty nice to have a matching helmet as well, looks the part. It's always nice to have a spare engine you can just through in if the one in the tractor gives up. Nice work!

Thanks. And sure anyone is welcome to steal my idea lol. I'll take more pics later of the cover that holds the belts. I wrote the belt numbers on it too so i can always find them. There might be a nicer way to make a holder without bolts like that. Maybe a hinged cover or something held with a clip or pin? Like a hood pin. I was going to do that but I figured this would be quick and easy. Should work ok. Any and all suggestions or ideas are not only welcomed but encouraged lol.

So what size gas tank do you have?  I think it would be cool to have a reserve tank on this build.  Just something small, something to limp it back to civilization with.
Also, do you know where to buy those pizza cutters?

The gas tank was built from a hydraulic reservoir on a paint sprayer, like for lines on a sports field and a toyota tacoma if I remember right. Not sure exactly on capacity, I should try to check it sometime. I think around 2.5 gallons? With only an 8hp engine, it should have pretty good range. That was one of the main reasons for using that engine besides being easier to work on and swap with it's smaller size.

Eventually, my plan is to build a matching off road trailer. That will have a place for a small gas can and extra supplies for longer trips. I'm going to build a small firewood trailer for haspin to get an idea of how an off road trailer would handle over rough terrain before building the real one. Kinda like a prototype.

2016 Haspin I didn't have any issue with running out of fuel.

The front wheels were from BMI karts website, they may still be on sale there for $20 each mounted

Okay that makes sense. I used to have a redneck rack on my mower (was a piece of plywood lol) and a crate to hold stuff bungied down. It held a 1.5 gallon tank perfectly.

I'd like to check how far I can actually get with a full tank but it's tough when mostly I'm in small areas driving slow. Not the best test for mpg that way.
