Build -Off - Another craftsman II build - Page 2 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Another craftsman II build   Build -Off - Another craftsman II build - Page 2 Icon_minitimeJanuary 31st 2016, 8:05 pm

Been awhile since ive worked on this.

Spent the weekend on it this weekend.

I thought I had the belt system worked out and just needed to build the clutch system but it wasn't that simple.

I spent all day Saturday designing a clutch had it togather and thought it woukd work. But during random conversation with creepycrawler he mentioned as long as it was on the tension side it should work...

Well it wasn't on the tension side. I never even thought about it, I was just trying to make sure the belt cleared everything. Thankfully tom has read red lines build thread where the same thing happened so I had to redo it all today.

Creepycrawler came up to assist, after a good whileof trying differant things we found the best thing to do cut the pitman arm of the new gear box and space it down, becuase it was hitting my engine pulley and it allowed us to run the belt with no idlers. Then built a double pulley clutch setup out of various pieces of the 3 parts mowers. Have to go get proper belt still and get transaxle togather and installed, but I think it should work.

Also had my daughter work on a gas pedal. I helped cut and weld but just like with the axle mounting I let her do the design ing.

She took the throttle cable from the yardman and we mounted in a piece of angle. It's a pretty basic design but it works. I told her she needed a big rest for her foot so it didn't slip off so we took the pedal from the variable speed control of the yardman and mounted it to the frame so it is what's pushing her lever down. Then we added a nice tight spring to the throttle at the engine pull it back

That's 2 belts zip tied togather it's the easiest way I've found to figure out the new belt length. Test fitment purposes only.

I should have everything I need to except a belt. Like I told you I need 102" or there abouts. Have to find somewhere open on Saturdays that has one or wait for an eBay belt

Belt is in the way of the steering arm... solution drop the arm below the belt.

Love the angled ends of the bumper. I assume the belt brake just stops the belt, acting like a brake? I had one of my mowers do that.

It doesnt work as a brake for the tractor, it stops the belt when the clutch is pressed in. Without it the belt can grab even though the clutch is pressed in, keeping you moving/unable to shift.

imo you should always have a belt brake.  Climbing hills and that type stuff if you hit the clutch and the belt doesnt release you are going over.  It also aides in shifting quickly.  All it does is pinch the belt so it can't spin from the friction when clutch is in.

Still working on the bumpers but need to get some round tubing.

Here is beginning of the rear

I was in process if editing post when you replied.

I shouldnt say yes to.your question as it is not a brake for the tractor.  It stops the belt when it is lose.

And for anyone that notices the backwards tire, it is just sitting there to make sure bumper clears.

Looks like its coming along great! It is a very enraging thing when the belt doesnt stop when shifting, i think ive put more wear on my trans from just jamming it into gear then from actually driving it, just cause it sometimes doesn't want to shift.

It is 90% complete. Still have some wiring to do, steering wheel, rear tires and finish bumpers.

I think unlike my sears well paint this one too.

Front axle will get swapped too but not before our ride march 19th

All of our tractors have belt breaks without them we would probably die.  Before I put one on my sears I rolledit twice on the same hill because with the chassis flexing the belt wouldn't disengage and over we went with the don't break no matter what the belt stops turning sothe tractor stopped moving.

I've had the same belt on my Sears now for over a year I'm not sure what most people get out of there belt but it's only $20 for a new belt and I'm not seeing any issues a year later

I was just looking back through the photos of this build a lot of it looks pretty crude but that got me to thinking about what I have bought for it.

I have bought the steel in the lock collar for the custom rear axle the engine pulley and the belt everything else has been recycled and reused from other tractors and random stuff that is laying around my garage.

Just took it around the block.

Engine doesn't seem to run right though.
So need to look into it, but it seemed to work ok.

I did swap the cast iron axle in, which dropped the front an inch.
I have 11 inches of clearance at center of front axle.

Over all height is 30 inches.

For comparison my sears has 12 inches clearance nut sits 39 inches tall.

Hopefully that keeps it more stable
