| I kinda explained it to someone today. Not defending myself but more why I do it. It's cheap for one, I have under $300 in mine currently. It's built not bought, I take pride in mine and respect everyone else's hard work. It's fun, hands down. "It's running and driving, so what?" Sometimes good enough isn't good enough. To have fun, modding is the way to go. Sometimes modding something already working makes your ride more fun! That's what it's all about. | |

| Stories?
One time I was at school and this yuppie came up to me with a "redneck CEO" hat from duck commander, I chuckled. Him: "I a more redneck than you are". Me: "o really.." Him: "you should see me drive around on my FOUR-WHEELER" Me: "I BUILD my ATV" Him: "I drive around like a MANIAC and jump it and drive through mud" Me: That makes you a MANIAC not a REDNECK" Him: My four-wheeler is better than your lawn mower!" Me: "How much did it cost, how does it go thru mud?" Him: Like $600, and it goes thru mud awesomely" Me: "I built my lawn mower for $100 and it goes thru mud awesome" Him: "That's a load of crap, your lawn mower is a piece of junk" Me: *chuckles while walking away*
Moral of the story: Rednecks are a league all of their own.

| Like Doug said, actions speak louder than words... When people see it run, they'll understand.
That said, don't take yourself too seriously... makes it easier not to get bent and to laugh along.

| Ive told a lot of people about my mower project, many scoff at it. Usually its why would you want something so slow for atv trails and the woods in general? But Some find it weird, some think its pointless to build a mower.
Lots of people dont understand whats inside a mower and what it can do, they just see them as lawn machines, so if you say one is built for offroad or whatever, ive noticed lots of default bias against whatever you proposed because of it being a grass cutter. They see it as what it was intended to be, not as its parts that can be molded into something else.
Talking crap is silly, fun to do in gest with friends, but to actually just talk down to someone or their ideas / projects / interests is just lame. Some people just have a hard time accepting things out of the norm or things they dont approve of for themselves, or just dont understand.
For me, ive always enjoyed crawling/ cruising through the woods more than say, rock racing or gofast Trucks / Cars. I prefer driving an RC Semi truck through obsticals and backing trailers into weird spots, instead of having traditional gofast cars or racing at a track. I dont care about winning, i like playing. So for an Offroad mower, its perfect for me. I enjoy cruising through the woods, smelling the nice air, looking at trees and plants, finding cool views or fun places to drive an RC, but still being able to attack some technical rocks or mud pit or whatever. VS having an ATV, unless you had a UTV, you cant really go slow or crawl through a technical rocky bit. You can kinda, but its not really made for such a task. They are built to give you an adrenaline rush through the woods. Its 2 completely different riding styles and intentions entering the woods. One person is out do get a rush hauling balls, the other, in my case, is basically out for a nice hike on an offroad vehicle. I am fortunate to have TSF in the Cascade mountains and there is many great views and places to make a snack / food destination and neat sights and cool things like a tree large enough to drive a jeep under on the Ceder Tree trail. So im looking for exploration, not just mashing throttle and throwing dirt.

| No reason you can't have both cruising/creeping in the woods and the adrenaline of high speed. That is the essence of a rally tractor. Ours do 45 top speed and can handle almost any technical trail. | |

| I've never gotten a hard time from anyone about the stuff I build. Sometimes a funny look because they don't understand but that's about it. Building vehicles and enjoying playing on them is my therapy. I'm currently working out of a 8x16 shed and it's packed with just about everything including surround sound stereo! Most people who see that doing this stuff makes me happy, just accepts it. At my age (44) there aren't as many haters I guess. We've seen it all and we can accept people for who they are by now. You young kids, take pride in the machines you build! Don't let people tell you it's a waste of time or their ATV is better. They mean Mommy and Daddy's ATV since they payed for it! | |

| Some builds are crap. But at least they are trying, and having fun. My first build was a piece of crap, but I had a blast with it. I personally don't care, I do what I do because I find it fun.
As for the whole my tractor is better than you atv, ha. It would take a really well built tractor, and a really crappy ATV to make that true. We can do 90 percent of what an ATV can, but at a 10 percent cost. That's good enough for me.
Quick story. I call my bud TRB(at the time, just Dan...) and say "hey, I speed up my mower, and it's a blast. You should try it out." He's like whatever, but since we are friends, he comes over and tries it out. Next thing you know, we have 5 guys, all having a blast on mowers.
So yea, most people look at a mower and see it as a mower, not anything else. But in the right hands, it's a cheap way to race your friends, off road, or beat the crap out of something.

| I get fan mail and I get hate mail take a guess as to what one I reed and what one I delete.
Or let me put it this way
I have personal invites to mud runs to be an intermission show that have canceled all the ATV mud runs and only run truck completions.

Sure nuff. I just dont enjoy the high speed stuff. Plus when the flat sections of trail are quarter or half miles of rocks 8-20in in diameter, anything faster than walking speed is just going to tear you and your ride up unless you are on full suspension. In TSF the only place you can sustain any kind of speed on something without suspension is the gravel roads. Its all about personal preference and what you have to ride on. I dont get any kicks going fast, so im not building my ride fast, other than maybe 18-20 for a road gear to cruise the gravel. But i need a super low range that cant be had with a 40mph pully swap. When you are climbing slickrock faces or trying to straddle a crack that will bury a 40in tire, or navigate the high spots in a rock garden thats made for 4x4s, i want to be able to idle down to maybe 8-15rpm at the rear tires. Everything has its place, quads do quad things right off the shelf, mowers are cheap and will do whatever you build them to do. They are essentially the same thing, just one has a far cheaper entry fee and requires creativity to see it as what you want. I dont know how it is in the other areas of the US, but in the PNW, 90% of atv riders are the kinds of people with flat bill Monster energy hats, and think the only thing worth anything is speed and shiny stuff. With the attitude of "drink beer, go fast, party" The main staging areas are always full of camper trailers and loud drunk people. This is not my thing at all. The great thing about my local spot though is there is camp spots everywhere out in the woods if you get to them. Lots are not accessable by truck unless its 4x4, and definitely no trailers. So i am so stoked to eventally be able to pack a tent, food and gas and go find a nice spot up high on the west side of the range, and camp with a view of the low lands towards the ocean, and have awesome wheelin all around. I cant wait. I guess im building an Expedition mower more than a rally or offroad. Its kind of cool that not a lot of people are into mowers and GTs, i for one enjoy having something different, especially that i have my own time into. The sentimental value created in the fabrication and modification of said vehicle exceeds the cash value of just buying something.

| You guys make some pretty valid points about "haters" just not understanding. And I'll tell you why I say this: I'm not new to wrenching. I been fixing and modifying stuff for a VERY long time. I'm also into go karts. Go karts are pretty striaghtforward. Small, nimble, fast- pretty easy to see the fun in them, even if you've never tried one. BUT- MULE is the first lawn tractor that I have modified in this way. I built it to be a tool, not a toy. I quickly discovereed that it makes a great toy, too! The FUN aspect hit me here- https://www.atltf.com/t2218-i-get-it-nowSo yeah- If you don't get it, you don't get it... | |
