I pulled with my 122 a few years in the 900 lb and the 1000 lb classes with ag style tires and did pretty well all stock. It weighed 890 lb with me on it.

Is it better for my tractor to be ungoverned or should i not remove the governor. I dont want to blow it up but having it ungoverned might make it more powerful. What are your guys thoughts????

just remove the govener and use your head, don't rev it high as it will go, just 2 grand or under. always remember:

My initial thought (Un-governed Foot Throttle cheers ) may not be the best approach for a pulling tractor, now that I'm thinking of it.
I think we need to ask some questions about the tractor before we make an educated suggestion. (the education would be mine of course because I don't know)...

* will this be a competition pulling tractor only?
* Will this tractor be used for romping / rallying as well?

I'm thinking that during a pull, the governor will help you maintain a certain rpm and adjust power according to available traction. This may be a benefit to a puller since you don't want to spin the tires and lose traction.

Also, if your governor is working correctly, it will have the ability to open the throttle wide open. So it shouldn't limit power,just RPM.

So I think it depends on the end use of the tractor really. I'm also really curious to see what the other guys say because I'm certainly not an expert in pulling. But I thought the subject should be explored a little more deeply than just stomping the throttle WFO. You may benefit from some of the finesse that the gov can offer.

Just like the difference between an automatic and a standard trans: I like standard because I like to be in control, but on the drag strip the automatic will win.  This is because it's programmable, and is faster reacting than a person's brain-to-foot connection and eliminates human error.

Most of my experience in traction comes from MX racing.  On the start, it's usually best to start a gear high and slip the clutch.  This limits wheelspin and also saves time by eliminating the 1st to 2nd shift time.  The key is to either limit wheelspin with the clutch or with the throttle, really it's a bit of both.  
I'm thinking that possibly the governor will help limit human error in this case.  I can imagine it's hard to keep a foot on a foot throttle steady as the machine is heaving and bouncing trying to find traction.  It's hard enough with a twist throttle!

Just thinking out loud here and again, I'm no expert.  Maybe experience from a different type of competition can cross over???

I know more than plenty about mx.. raced from age 6 to 14 rode from 3 til now. lol I was always good on starts until I got to the corner...
I always would start a gear high and rev her to the max, sit on the gas cap and let her rip.. Concrete starts i sat neutral position and took off in second 3/4 throttle until i hit the dirt. Of course this was after a bad ass burnout lol

And the tractor will be used for tractor pulling and pulling things around the yard. no offroading

I was just thinking out loud back there. I'm still not 100% convinced either way, but unless you compare results between two identical machines, one with and one without a governor it will all be speculation and opinion.  Wink 

I don't think there will be a big difference anyway. So unless it's a serious competition machine, just do what you feel comfortable with. You can always do a foot throttle to a Gov, then eliminate the Gov at a later date.  Cool  cheers
