| Sounds to me like you have a number of issues to deal with.
The backfiring can be caused by a number of things. Valve or ignition timing could be off, could have a sticky valve, too. The choke deal is usually a clogged carb, but could be symptomatic of whatever is causing the backfiring.
Let's start here-
How long have you had the engine, how long has it been doing it, and did you do enything to the engine right before the problems started?

| The timing key is indeed something to look at. Have you have the flywheel off at any point?
FWIW- running a 2-cycle mix thru your engine will NOT cause any short-term damage. At the very worst, it will foul the plug after an extended period of time.

| Now remember- and this is CRITICAL- after replacing that timing key, torque the nut to 150 lbs/ft. Undertighten it, and it will shear again. Seen it a million times. | |

| Keep in mind that keys don't just shear for no reason. An improperly torqued flywheel is usually the culprit (which will be fixed when you re-assemble), BUT take a moment to think about the motor as a system and how it was running when it first got the problem. You may uncover a different cause which should be fixed or you will keep having the same problem. Lean running or an intermittent Switch or coil or plug could cause the motor to fire at the wrong time and shear a key.... Good luck! | |

| While your description would seriously benefit from some punctuation, glad you got it sorted out.
By the way- Didn't you say in your first post that you'd already adjusted the valve lash?
