Probably wouldnt hurt. If you think its busted, you dont need stuff plugging your lube system.

The governor is toast. Now it's time to crack open the case and replace it. If I plan on running a foot throttle should I still run a governor?
On my motor i didt run the gov and ran my throttal cabel straight to the butterfly on the carb and worked good for about 1-2 weeks but it did mess up the carb alot so i hooked the gov back up and ran great but i dont know if yours would do the same thing but it might.
Yeah i would crank it open and chek it out.

I only have to remove the engine from the frame, drain the oil and pop off the bottom cover right?

Yes- crack it open. You do not want governor bits floating around in your sump. Drain the oil and yank that bottom cover. Be ready for the camshaft to fall out...

Also- if you are going to run the throttle straight to the carb, you need to set up a pedal stop so the cable doesn't yank too far/hard. Set the stop so that once the throttle plate gets to WOT, you cannot push the pedal any further. The throttle stop can be as simple as a bolt, placed in such a way as the pedal contacts the bolt head, and you can adjust it.

Thanks Doc,

I drained the oil and took the engine out tonight. I can't find any identification labels on the engine anywhere. Do you know where I could find this information? I'll need to order a new governor and a case gasket.

Should be on the tinwork somewhere, either stamped directly or onto a tag.

Got it! Thanks! You were right. I had to use steel wool on the valve cover to get the information. Now it's time to look up my parts and place the order.

These two videos say it all...

I took the engine apart and replaced the governor. I put everything back together and drove it around my yard. Two minutes later it failed again. I'm going to have to rip it apart AGAIN. Something must have failed other than the governor gear and counterweights.

This is a mystery to me now... The governor is fine.

Okay... when you say " it failed", could you be a bit more specific as to exactly what happened?

Verify governor adjustment again. Procedure is as follows:

Loosen the pinch bolt that holds the governor arm to the governor shaft. Turn the arm until the throttle butterfly hits wide open throttle. Holding it there, now turn the shaft in the same direction till it stops. Holding both in place, retighten the pinch bolt.

Edit- sorry bout that. Was having a wireless signal issue, and couldn't view the video until now...

It's back together but I'm afraid something will go wrong again... I'll probably try to start it up and run it tomorrow night.

I put it back together and took it for a spin and it seems to be holding!

I even tested it up a hill to load up the engine. The governor kept everything in check. I noticed the transmission was whining though up the hill, not sure what that's all about. I started mocking up the exhaust and I should have it finished by the end of the week.

Thanks for the help everyone! Let's keep our fingers crossed that thing thing holds out!
