MTD off-road romper build.

Ah nice, working out in the cold! Or did you work inside and then take pics in the cold? Anyway, I still can't see how the brakes got burned up in the short amount of time they were on there. Even cars get stuck calipers ect. go for miles and the pads aren't burned off right away. Really weird. Of course I don't know how close they were to start with. That rotor has a sort of rippled look to it in the pic though. Like it's realy been cooked or something.

Nah man! Good ol camp, primitive tools i can find, crimping wire connectors with vice grips in the dark on dirt floors with a light snow coming through the door.

Pads were worn a little, ill take a pic sometime. Def enough to make them way out of adjustment. i think you can adjust the caliper and be able to use the hole pad, but if they keep burning out then the design isnt good.

Rare steering box now damaged and waiting to explode at haspin.

Steering box probably just bound up, but it would be worth looking into. You been using the exhaust cut out or mostly the muffler? Still sounds good even with the carb/lack of power issue.

If it is damaged I'll just swap. I think if im lucky i only chipped the pinion tooth, and thats removable.

Yea, im pretty sure its broke just by the feel of it. The pitman arm bent down a little too, so need to stuffin it up a little. I think the beginning was open all the way to where i slide down the hill then the mufflers were on for the rest of the video.

Looks like a awesome time. Your Lucky that the ice is hard enough for you to drive on. Never freezes enough here for some reason. That sucks about the steering. If you only chipped a tooth your lucky. With my luck it would've ate the steering box and anything else in the way.

I hope i chipped the pinion gear, then its a easy fix, ill have to see. Just a little more work to swwap a new box in guess.

Aluminum u joint is getting wobbly pretty bad, going to swap in a steel one so it splines onto the steering colum better.

AHHHH your so lucky you can get to a junkyard to get mower parts. I know of a few my old man goes to that has mowers and stuff but they wont let me in till im 18. And he dosent know exactly what to look for

Same here man, the only junkyard with mowers around is my yard

I guarantee you this build wouldnt be where it is without that junkyard. cheap parts for days, gave me good opportunity to build something cool.

Thought this would be coming back to the shop for upgrades soon but dont seem like thats happening, maybe not at all this year?

lol, anyways the mower has been doing its thing all summer! Acting like a little atv and getting beat with the broken steering box still. One gear completely stripped out now. Summer pics:





Little bit of damage on the footrest.


Well brought it back for some lovin and small improvements. Heres a refresher on what the front looks like here. my custom old fairlead and those old lights up front. Chop that all off and build a better bumper!


Little trick i know. Notching tube is a huge pain most of the time for custom notches. So i wrap the tube in paper and tape it, slide it halfway off the end of the tube, and use marker and cut small pieces till it fits good. then simply slide the paper up the tube again and trace the paper to the tube and cut!



Fuzzy pic i know, but several bends and pieces of pipe later its a stinger lookin bumper. One of the pipes actually notched on the back deep to clear the winch sprocket.




4 bends used, but you can hardly tell after the flap disk goes over all the welded joints.


Ive had this nice fairlead for a while, main reason for re doing this bumper, so i straightened it all out and welded it up to give it some strength in the corners.


Made a 1/4" plate for it to bolt to and welded that to the bumper.

Kinda neat how the winch gear fits in there. Makes the front end look smoother.

Yea it looks more up to date. Im really trying to make this look more clean and better.

Anywho, time to cut all the junk off and re start. I torched the spring buckets/shock towers off and unbolted the grill. i cut off the other winch mounting spot, it was a little un even so i got it really squared away and boxed the ends for strength.




With a bunch of smoothing out of the way now, i started on the lower shock tabs. Template to actual tab.



Went and got some push mower handles for bends on the shock hoop. i know what your thinking, flimsy and what not, but i honestly think its pretty good. I cant hardly get them to flex around. I could add a bar up top to tie the bars together, but thats up for debate. Cut out and welded on some top tabs too.  I also tried something new, with joining the tubes together. People generally use something called "slugs" to fit inside the pipe, gap the pipe 1/8" or so and then you get a really good weld penetration in the gap. i did the same thing, but i slit some of the same tube and put it inside the pipe.

Also been busy on revamping the welding cart. The caster suck so bad in the stone driveway, so i put some old wheels i had laying around on, and built a front steer axle for it.

Nice deal. I think the front end looks cleaner now.

Should bolt those lights I sold you to the top mount on those.

I think it would look really clean if you put the lights behind the mesh grille to kind of hide/protect them
