| I have a Briggs 12.5 model 286707-0441-01 that I got out of my friends Craftsman II. I put it in my Murray and now I need to wire up a key switch. I have the old wiring harness but need to know what wires do what. There is a black wire coming from the front(kill wire?). There is also a set of orange and red/magenta wires with a plug. I need to know what wires are for the headlights and recharge/feedback wire for the battery. I have searched Sears.com and Briggs and Stratton's website and came up with nothing of a diagram. I need help! Anybody that knows what wires are what or where I can find a (free) diagram, your responses are greatly appreciated. Also there is no fuel solenoid on this motor. I an so tired! of jumping off the bat to start, no way to restart if you stall all alone on the trail! | |

| If you know the model and code number, go to partstree.com and look there. If you know the make and model of your friends tractor, that would be best. I looked up a diagram for my 14hp Kohler there by searching the tractor it came out of. | If you know the positions of your key switch you should be able to wire it up like FearlessFront did if you watch his video.
Black is your kill wire, it goes to ground to kill the engine. There needs to be a switch in line with this wire. Heavy duty wire goes to your starter from one terminal on your solenoid. Heavy duty wire goes from the battery to the other terminal of your solenoid. Wire goes from the side of the solenoid with the battery wire to your start switch/ button, the other side of the switch goes to the small spade post on the solenoid.
Stator (if your engine has it): Red goes to the side of the solenoid with the battery on it. White goes to your headlights. Head Forum Administrator ** Chat Moderator ** Facebook Page AdminATLTF Facebook Page ** Chatbox ** How To Upload Pictures

I'm guessing my orange is what it supposed to be white? The only white wires on this tractor are for the safety switch. | |

| Its probably the same wire. Manufacturers use different wires just because. My wiring harness for my Kohler had Red, White, Black, Blue, Pink, Purple, Green and Yellow. Confusing as all hell so I looked up the tractor model and printed out 5 diagrams so I wouldnt get confused again.
But the general rule is if its not black, its not ground. Head Forum Administrator ** Chat Moderator ** Facebook Page AdminATLTF Facebook Page ** Chatbox ** How To Upload Pictures

| Thanks for the info, should help me A LOT in wiring it. Someone should make a standard coloring guide that all makers should have to follow, because you're right, they can be confusing as hell! Our tractor we use for mowing, a JD LX280 (crazy right?!) has EVERY color from a box of 60 crayola crayons! Most all of them are for safety switches and hour counter and all that other "useless" stuff. | |

| I can relate... I worked in car electronics installation for several years. Installing keyless entry and remote start units, I dealt with a huge number of combinations. Some wires in the newer cars are striped, but then have silver dots on them. Apparently it is possible to run out of color combinations wiring a car. | |
