Pulley swap questions.

In the past i have tried to get my motor pulley off to change to a larger one and i cant get the darn thing off! any tips?

Take the bolt out of the bottom first off. After that, try using a pry bar to pry it off, but be careful not to hurt the engine or the pulley (if you intend on keeping the pulley). If that doesnt work right off, try heating up the shaft of the pulley (area between the top and bottom pulley). Once its nice and hot, try prying it again. Should come off. Thats usually how I get em off the engine.

Optionally, you can bring the engine into an auto or machine shop, they may be able to help you out for a little fee.

I tried the pry bar i will try heat next. I was also wondering if i made my lawn tractor go faster than 10 miles per hour would i start having more trans axle problems? Thanks for the reply!

My Gen 1 racer was just a rear pulley swap, 8" to a 2 1/2". It did 15 on a flat surface and my transaxle didnt have any problems.

In the past i have had 2 input needle bearings go to piss. Also the input bevel gear use to skip before i modified it. I think that i have a 7 in pulley on the rear and my tractor goes 10 mph. I just wonder if the increased speed on the rear pulley would cause those needle bearings to go bad quicker.

Probably. If you increase the speed its going to move faster obviously, so wear is imminent.

ya i guess a. where could i get a cheap trans axle that would hold up better than a Dana foote? Would a junk yard sell Trans axles for cheap?

Maybe. Or put an ad up on Craigslist looking for a free one.

If your still having problems with tje engine pully.my buddy got his off by taking the bolt out and driving his mower around the yard till it fell off.

That;s how i got the engine pulley off of my tractor. Only took 2 mins for it to work itself lose.

Footes are know for failure - most racers use peerless 600's series ( if running a trans) - most use a peerless 700 and chain drive to a rear axle.

I have a peerless 6 speed in my ex mod murray - i used heavy gear oil in it and ran it up to around 35-40mph ocasionally and never had an issue - im still planning on using it in my next mod.

hahahhaha ill have to try riding it around without the bolt in. this spring i will probably get a better built trans axle and pully swap for more speed. do any of you guys have clutch set up pictures or ideas? i would have to change my clutch in order to get a larger pulley up front

I drilled two holes through the pulley just outside of the hub, on opposite sides.

I pulled the retaining bolt,

I then found a piece of 1/4" plate steel big enough so that I could drill two holes the same distance apart.

I then put a socket smaller than the shaft size on the end of the shaft, and bolted the plate over top.

Then I tightend the bolts up, until the pulley broke free.

This is and old tried and true trick in a lot of mechanical professions.

Sometimes a little heat and a whack with the hammer to shcok the pulley help too.

BE WARNED IT MIGHT BEND THE PULLEY IF YOU PULL TO HARD ON IT.

The 930 is not the best choice from Peerless, but it is still far better than any Foote or Spicer transaxle.

Is the 820 series transaxle good?

yeah the Peerless 800's are what most people use. The 820 is a solid gearbox but its not indestructible, they do still have aluminum casings which can easily cracked and broken if you hit a huge rock for example. The 820 would be a very choice if you want a multi speed gearbox.

what are these most common in??? brand wise. toros?

800 series is what Stretch and I use. Ours are modded pretty heavily though.

Why are peerless 820 series trans axles so cheep? They seem very high quality some are only 150 dollars new

how do you know what size belt to get after pulley swap?
