the john deere would be stronger, cause if i remember right the other mower you have is a pan chassis. correct me if i'm wrong

I would put some chains on the tires you have, or get a set of AG tires. Pulley change would be good but not necessary IMO, I wouldn't want to mod it to much. But that's just me, do with it as you want.

maybe i can get new tires
