This is how my tractor is currently set up, it works good, but I'm thinking of revamping it this spring.

I may change it to a center pivot point, like this.

It doesn't hurt clearance at all. If you look at my avatar pic you can see there's no parts of the steering hang below the axle.
Here's another pic for you... I couldn't go straight thru the frame with the steering, so I used a 1/2" u-joint to get everything to line up. I added a couple greasable sleeves to hold it all steady.
