[24] The Chubb Cadet All Terrrain Farm Mower

Build Plan:
-Build an Off Road Mower capable of mowing the hill climbs at the farm
-be able to remove the deck so in-experienced drivers can easily have fun on an easy to drive hydro
-tire swap to gain 1.5" more deck lift and ground clearance
-fix horrible sloppy steering
-repair oil leak in Kohler Command CV18
-build a front bumper with tow point for moving trailers and wagon
-I'm not a fan of the sedan looking factory hood so I may hood swap it
-add front and rear lights
-maybe re-wire tractor or at least fix previous owner's hacks

well, I had to bite the bullet and replace the steering fan gear because it was severely worn.  I also replaced the missing bolts that tighten up the clearance for the front axle mount.  I used double nuts so they can’t come loose.  The steering now feels really nice and factory fresh. I even aligned it which was a PITA. I was looking at the hitch today which is pretty basic so I’m thinking about making a 2 inch receiver for the back of this since it is a utility build.

I've made some more great progress on this build and got some of the not fun hard stuff out of the way.

I replaced the front main seal, cleaned the disgusting mess of a motor and tractor, replaced the fuel line which was a total PITA because it connects to the tank in a spot buried above the trans, replaced the breather, reassembled the engine tins, sourced the missing hardware, I had to helicoil a hole for the breather cover because somebody really boogered up the hardware and the wiring on this engine.  But anyway I got it all back together, started right up, no oil leaks and it drove around the house nicely especially with the steering fixed.

Then onto see if the deck clears the bigger tires.  The left rear tire hit the belt tensioner for the deck drive belt but a little creativity and a welder fixed that.  Now I can off road on saturday and mow on sunday lol.

I’ve had these lights in stock for almost 14 or 15 years.  I bought them off of eBay for a go kart.  Since this is a low budget project I’m thinking about using them on this but after installation, I need to rename the tractor Geordi La Forge lol.

Are you going to keep the stock pulley setup? How fast does it go stock?

It's a shaft driven transaxle.

Very cool! There is a shaft driven cub 122 at my grandfathers but that's old.

So this build is at a point where I don't want to put too much more time and money into it until I test it this spring. Fingers crossed it mows and performs the way I want it to in the application.

If it passes the initial shakedown I would like to build a front bumper for it and a 5 gallon bucket mount for the back.

well, I had some time today, so I fabricated a simple front bumper .  I had to drill and tap the bar stock that slides into the frame.  It’s nothing too fancy but it’s a lot better than the factory one.  this can push over some small saplings and provide a front tow point.
