Some of the China carbs seem to be fine. I hate using them too, but sometimes that is the only option to save a buck. For off-roading, you will probably find that people are using a mikuni style carb as a replacement too.
I think you can still find rebuild kits for them. I've heard people in the past having good luck with isavetractors.

The general consensus with aftermarket carbs these days, for off-roading at least, is that the kohler V twin pumper carbs are best for a downdraft setup, and the mikuni clones are best for a side draft. The kohler pumper carbs are extremely popular with Briggs opposed twin guys, though I’m personally running a mikuni on my opposed.
Usage plays a role in what carb you go with, a basically stock engine to mild mods and a few extra revs you should be able to work over a stock carb to perform well. Want to crank out the revs and build a ripsnorter then you'll want to consider an upgrade if possible.
Is this the same as what you have?
If so I can get that carb and or intake dirt cheap from my local salvage yard as long as they haven't scrapped the motor, I doubt it would too cost much to ship as it's not very big nor heavy.
Best thing to do is download the manual for the engine from Kohlers website, it should tell you the exact carb for it although there could be more than 1 option...
