Now correct me if I'm using the wrong terms here, but I need some help. My Sears compact 8 came to me with only one drag link installed with another hole in the steering linkage for a second one. I removed the old drag link, and replaced, and added drag link with 1/2 inch heim joints, all thread, and hardware. With the heim joint linkages added the tie-rod is binding. Will it be detrimental to my machine to not have the tie-rod installed?

If I remember right there is a "tie rod" that runs from spindle to spindle. There is a steering link that goes from a steering arm to one spindle. I think there is a steering rod? from the gear to the steering arm?
If I am understanding you put heims on the steering link? Then added a second one that was not there.
I think it is an either/or on the second steering link "or" Tie rod. Running both could cause excessive wear and binding like you mentioned. I'd remove the spindle-to-spindle tie rod if you run the second steering link. That would be redundant.
Edit: The more I think about it. Adding that second link could be causing your binding on the existing steering link. I think especially when you turn "right?". The Heims could be stacking on the steering arm and or possibly restricting some turning radius? I can't remember how far apart those holes are.
