Hi, I am brand new to modding lawn tractors but its been a lot of fun so far! My first project is a Craftsman DYS 4500 with a 26HP Kohler and TuffTorq K46 rear end (I don't know what information yall want so thats what I have) There are two things I'm struggling with so far, first is moving the battery to somewhere else on the tractor to replace the steering column/dash and hood with a custom hood. second is figuring out the best way to weld the dif. I've heard people say you can't lock a hydrostat but I know a differential when I see one and this thing needs both tires turning. Any and all advise is appreciated!
Thanks! MTM

I've read the same thing about not being able to lock hydro rear ends too and also wondered... I mean a diff is a diff so what's the diff!? Lol. Maybe it would transmit too much shock to the pump or internals whereas a belt would absorb it?
I think I’ve heard you can’t lock them too but honestly I think that idea just comes from people who simply don’t like hydros and want to convince everyone to switch to geared since that seemed to be a popular theology back in the Fearless Front days. RCG I think locked the hydro mudder and there was never an issue with it. I’ve rebuilt hydros before and they worked great so it’s not like you can’t take them apart.
