Help with old Murray tractor

Hi.  I have a old Murray 16 tractor shown in the photo. Can someone tell me how I can change the gearbox oil or gearbox grease?  Quantity?  Brand?  I come from Austria and these devices were not common here.  Can anyone provide a service manual?

With that said, are you able to locate the model number plate so we can help find the manual for your exact tractor? They made a few that look the same in the 1980's. Also if you could take a pic of the underside and any numbers you can find on the rear end itself it would be a big help.

I know someone who has one that looks like yours and his has a 90 degree gearbox and a transaxle. I'm not sure what his 90 degree box is exactly but I'm pretty sure it has a Peerless 2300 transaxle which has drain and fill plugs.

Definitely looks like a 2300 to me but you never know, hopefully someone else has an idea also?

I can see the 90 degree gearbox (pulley) in the other photo and that you have the disc brake instead of the drum you lucky duck! Lol



Apparently the 2300 calls for 80w90 but I'm sure 75w90, 80w or 90w would all work fine but you'll want to get whats in there really good and warm to get as much of it out as possible.

A quick search of the tractor model didn't get me anywhere but I'll look again later this evening.

As an owner of a couple of these transaxles/Murrays. @Brianator is right. Hopefully neither plug is seized into the transaxle. Hopefully you have a 8pt socket or 8pt box end wrench that can get it. Open ends will just strip them out. If you can, give it a couple wraps with a hammer to help loosen it.

I just realized you lucky dog.  You have the model with the Right Angle Gearbox!  Nice, both mine had belt twist.


PS:  Pro tip. If you cannot get the fill plug out, but can get the drain plug out, don't worry.  Put your tractor in neutral.  You can take the shifter out and pour in the gear oil there.  

It takes 64 oz. of the 80w90.

Love it!  Knowing what I know now and my personal preference.  I wished I never painted mine blue now and left it patina'd.

As you say, with patina he also looks good.  That's exactly why I now bought a second one.  With luck I was able to find another one.  40 years old Garden tractors are not that common either.  The paint on this one is in very bad condition, so I will restore it and build it up like your blue one MightyRaze as you have shown us in your Kal retuning!  The way you built this one it looks realy great with the frame extension and shock absorbers! I like it!

Hello. I bought two identical mowing decks for my tractor. I have now noticed that the V-belts were installed differently by the previous owner. Which installation is the right one? Do any of you to know this?
