Funny how a magnet coming loose was just talked about a few days ago. I'm working on an old Toro snowblower for someone and as I'm testing for spark... "THUNK" and it locks up! Talk about a coil smashingly good time, anyone need parts for a 1979 HM80!? Lol.

Those tecumseh engines are as common as dirt in these parts, you can't just pop a new one on there?

@TechnoChicken a 1979 Tec common as dirt in your area...? I'm sorry but I'm going to have to call BS on that! Lol. I've been working on all sorts of machines for 20+ years and this is maybe the 3rd of these of this vintage I've ever seen and the only one I've seen still running (until recently).

Doesn't matter anyhow the owner would rather scrap it, it was just a backup. I wouldn't likely have a easy time finding a coil and a flywheel magnet for it anyhow, the one magnet is good and damaged!

I made a mistake, it's a HM80 not a HH (I've made the correction above), the characters are so rusty it's almost impossible to read some of them.

I have 1 of those old tecumsehs and the new ones should (Should being famous last words lol) just bolt up to the frame, tecumseh horizontal flatheads are literally easier to find then honda civics here, almost half of the blowers on marketplace and kijji are tecumseh flatheads, so not sure what you are talking about, I'm going to call BS on your call BS

Took a scroll through marketplace, 24 out of 36 are tecumseh, thats 66% percent, seems pretty common to me

@TechnoChicken I see one for sure that has the right engine (bottom right) and a second possible. This old HM has points unlike the the HH series with electronic ignition.

Good that, I had one lying around here that had the points, boy did I ever hate that engine lol, have to pull the flywheel off to clean the points, and you have to pull the engine to pull the flywheel, not fun at all.

Little pic dump here, just stuff I've collected and am working on:

Wheelhorse 12/32 utility machine. Swapped to about 15kph and I added that little wooden dump bed to throw tools and whatnot in there, great for repairing fences, towing trailers and whatever other farm chores you can throw it's way.




Freebie Bolens st140, can't find a belt long enough for the deck, get used occasionally for towing stuff, but mostly just sits


My Little MTD beater tractor, has a 6.5 china clone and some kinda beefy ass transaxle, way oversize for the mower.






This little go kart thing is the 2nd worst I've ever bought, paid 250 for it and regretted literally 10 minutes later. It runs and drives, the electric start broke the first time I drove it so you have to bump start it now, but that's not the worst of the issues at all.
Not sure if anyone with china ATV experience could help with this, but it starts and runs fine when cold, but then after you drive for a while (15-20 mintutes) it loses power and barely lugs its own weight (The motor just bogs when launching, doesn't sound like the clutch is slipping). leave it to cool off a bit and its fine again for a bit. Also to be noted it smokes a bit out the exhaust all the time, and also has white smoke coming from the head area?

@TechnoChicken I had to pull the motor too, couldn't get the fan shroud off with it on the machine.

I have essentially the same tractor but a year or 2 older with the steel steering wheel. It's a MTD Seven Hundred and my best guess is it's a '68, maybe '69 and (presumably) the original 7hp Briggs and Stratton (has points). It's actually my first tractor and what kicked off this whole adventure for me! The trans in them is a Peerless 1200, 3 speed with reverse. As tiny as they are they're listed at over 400 lbs!

Found a spot just big enough for one on my toolbox for safe keeping! I'll probably wait until spring to start sticker bombing tractors!

Yeah they are ridiculously tough for the size of tractor, it's evident that MTD built these before the bean counters got their hands on the company!
(Mine also has the shaft drive deck that I've yet to set up, if yours has the same and you know how to route the belt any advice would be appreciated)

@TechnoChicken I unfortunately didn't get the cutting deck with it and gave up hope a few years ago. Yes I know what you mean about the right angle gearboxes and I'm almost certain I have a copy of the manual for the tractor so when I get a chance I'll dig it out and post a diagram!

On topic of old mtd's can anyone help identify this lawn tractor it was my grate grandfather's and has no name model or serial number (that I can find) the pictures are horrible because my grandfather's shed is on top of it


To me it looks like this picture although my grate grandfather's is a 18/42 and I cannot find it anywhere. It also has a Briggs Oppy

Sweet I have a feeling someone screwed with stuff when they put the new motor in but having a diagram would really help

That's a toughie there @ranch king pro 08, that color scheme really has me stumped! MTD sold alot of store branded tractors and I suspect it could be one of those,
. Here's a list I found of all MTD owned brands and alot of the store brands they manufactured. Maybe with a little research you can find the existence of one of the stores in around the area he would've bought it maybe from the early to late 80's as thats my best guess for it's age. The foot board pads yells "premium" to me that's for sure and the picture of the 18/46 is definitely close!

P.S. Look under the seat if you haven't already!

@TechnoChicken No such luck with a belt routing diagram for it but because it's horizontal shaft to horizontal shaft it shouldn't be too difficult to figure out, looks like you have the stock (double) engine pulley as well luckily!
