smithco runaway scooter, I just purchased one of these old guys, and need all the help i can get on information. Mine does not have brakes, i'm guessing they should apply when you put the peddle to the neutral position, I have searched online and can't find any info on these. I have one other problem, it will go into forward with no problem, but have a hard time getting it to reverse. I looked at the linkage underneath, and although the pivot arm is very sloppy, all looks okay, is there an adjustment i could do? i appreciate any help i can get. oh by the way the model # is 60.025
I read some about the machines. It appears that the forward/reverse is a shuttle valve for a hydrostatic drive. You are on the right track I think. I would try to see if I could get it to go into reverse (block it up off the ground) by prying whatever the treadle valve pushes on with a bar. It probably doesn’t have to move much and the slop may be preventing that, or it could be stuck. Find out if it works first by manually moving the valve.
i took some pictures, can't figure out how to post them,,, I will try to see if i can figure out how to take the slop out of the shift/accelerator linkage, looks like somebody has tried before, as i can see some washers on the upper side of the shaft.
I have it on my lift, so that will be no problem, do you have any idea where i might find a schematic of the hydraulick pump? i would like to remove the side panels near the linkage, but i'm afraid i'll open panoras box if i try without a picture of what i'll be looking at. I'm guessing the brakes are the hydraulic line, and are applied when the selector is in the middle position, any thoughts on that?, i sure appreciate the help you offering.
Nice looking Runaway you got there! Never thought I'd see another one here, haha.
As far as the brakes, they don't apply via the travel control pedal. But when you go from forward or reverse, the "hydraulic braking" is supposed to slow and stop the vehicle. Actually mine has a locking brake pedal to the left of the travel pedal, but it was only supposed to be used for parking.
As for the reverse adjustment, try flipping the seat up and watching the linkages on the pump when you work the travel pedal, if yours is the same as mine there will be an idler pulley that acts as a roller on the control shaft on the pump and works back and forth to give you forward and reverse. That will tell you whether you are getting full throw, maybe even take a couple pictures for us. Then there are a couple different adjustments you can make if that is the problem.
