1980 Montgomery Ward 10/38 Lawn Tractor I have figured that out. My first thought was a foote or peerless, but don't quote me on that. If a peerless, there should be a badge on it somewhere. I'll continue to look.

Doing some research, looks like MTD may have made that tractor? If so I would guess a Peerless 654 (600 series) as that is what they were using in that timeframe. A more visual inspection would tell. Badges, the 600 was pretty unique shaped as it was not symmetrical. @Alliskidd21 I would consider a 600 expert. LOL

okay, thanks I appreciate it a lot! I think I will be getting the tractor later in the week so I will have to look over the trans to see! I am also a big fan of the 600s, I had one in my first mud mower a dynamak 8/36 and I have one in my artic cat grass cat race mower in my opinion they are lawn mower transaxle versions to the garden tractor transaxles 633s and 2300s, anyways I was guessing mtd made the tractor to.
okay, I got this old girl today it's in pretty good shape overall same frame as a dynamark, amf, muarry of the era just late 70s early 80s lawnmowers. this one has a peerless 600 so that got me excited I just swapped in a 15 hp Briggs as soon as I got it, the trans has a 6 1/2 pulley on it right now I have a 7 3/4 in pulley for the motor, this will be a replacement for my fail built craftsman lt1000 plans for this build include - front bumper ( heavy-duty for runnin over some trees lol) - rear bumper -tree kickers -rear rack -cut rear turfs -8in carsile snow hog fronts - possibly trans lock -boat winch I think that's about it just a fun quick rally/trail mower to run through the woods with my friends, show them a mower can keep up with a wheeler
okay over the weekend I got the motor in me and my dad made a wiring harness I rigged up a fuel system and swapped on an lt series craftsman seat, lots more comfortable for riding! I also realized it needs more speed, so I have a 7 in motor pulley and the trans has a 7-7 1/2 in pulley should be plenty quick about 1:1 next up is ride it find all the weak points and improve them!

Yeah the ol' 600 series transaxles are tough to beat, I've run them in a few different builds and always loved them.
If you're going to speed it up significantly with a pulley swap however, it might be worth taking it apart and replacing the pinion shaft bushing with a bronze one or even a pair of needle bearings. The factory bushings are steel and can actually get hot enough to sieze to the pinion shaft with much higher input speeds. I've locked up two of them so far, ends the fun real quick.

thanks, I appreciate the modding tips a lot! the only issue I have ever had is the shift rods break right at the point where they go into the trans in the shifter cup thing.
yep defiantly a classic . I'm kinda thinking it is too nice to hack up and may become a light yard work tractor I also have a mid 60s simplicity Broadmoor 707 that is strictly trail mower the way she sits it has no motor 23 in ags and 8 in snow hogs fronts. it pivots in the middle which is very cool I was thinking to swap a cast craftsman front axle in the front and make it dual pivot. which would be sweet for crawling.
