okay, I am going to start this build with this old craftsman I got for free. the hydro is junk so I scraped that leaving me with a bare frame and front axle and stering assembley. because the hydro was junk i dug out a straitght axle and a small 3 speed out of a toro 910. my plan is to slam the rear axle in it weld the spider gears in the diff housing solid and use a chain to run it . i am guessing the motor will be a briggs flatty 8,10,11.5,12 ect not sure yet, i will have to find out . i am thinking about doing a trianglated 4 link under the front but will have to see how the stock axle proforms first.
Looks like a Peerless 400 transmission and a Peerless 100 axle. You will have to spin the trans faster of you want any speed at all. I have the same parts here, waiting for a build. I’m not sure what will become of my parts. Watching!
thanks for the feedback, I ended up finding some pieces of steel that I will be strengthing the chassis up with they are in 4ft chunks so they should run the entire length of the frame. I also got my rear axle in and mocked up. my dad cut the old 8 in rims off, I then decided the build would be cool if it had 23-inch ag tires would be cool on this build, so found some old 5 bolt cast iron hubs off a David bradly and put them on, i used what was left of the old rims on the axle and turned it down with the grinder so they fit tight then drilled a hole through them and bolted them on
well do to weak spots in the frame, aka large cracks above the front axle the build will come to an end but worry all the parts will be saved for another build ........ well in the meantime I think I will continue to work on some old snowmobiles I have to get ready for winter if anybody's interested in seeing a vintage snowmobile build let me know!

The frame CAN be repaired. Maybe set it aside if you can’t get use of a welder now. Maybe check to see if there is a community college that has a welding shop they will let you use.
well, I decided I wanted to take a different route on a mud mower aka something no one else has built, and go custom frame with 2 pieces of 4 ft steel that was going to be used as a frame strengthener on the craftsman frame I have a welder and welding experience but I think custom frame would be cooler and more unique. I have a general mockup going right now and it should end up being pretty darn cool in the end

i have two old frame rails from a dixon that are rectangle tube and i wanna build a rally/ racemower from scratch with it just gotta figure it out transmission wise
ya, I had an old Dixion I thought the frame looked pretty beefy with the tube I wanted to build a go-cart but ended up selling. it was one with the cone drives.
