yeah i think it was the diff that exploded like that , the diffs on peerless 930s is the weak link for me. the clusters were fine and input gears were fine. Since i got the 2300 i am thinking about putting it in this one so i stop breaking trannys, does anyone know if you can shift on the fly with a 2300 without grinding gears?

I've never driven my 2300 but the nature of the way it works, I think you have to come to a complete stop to shift. I also don't know how you could find a gear in it while you are driving, lol.

IDK if it's universal, but mine is a 4 speed. First is way out of the way, very weird.

You can see in this how hard it is to actually put it in the position it needs to be in, so I doubt that you could find a gear while driving. The first gear I go into is first, btw.

I think shifting on the fly has everything to do with getting the input shaft speed just right which you can easily do with the gas pedal. Friday night when I put the gas pedal on my wheel horse I shifted 1,2, 3 on the fly in high range with no grinding.

A 2300 is a sliding geear transaxle other wise know as a "crashbox" which meas no gears are meshing when in neutral unlike a constant mesh transaxle. My Peerles 600's are semi-sliders and they shift in the go just fine, so I would assume the 2300's would work about the same way. But I've never driven a tractor with one, so who knows. Haha

So basically like a full sized tractor. Will probably take apart the 820 today and clean up the 2300 but I am not disassembling it unless there's something broken , slight amount of water came out but it wasn't much and the gears are smooth and all the shafts turn freely so I might just fill it up with some motor oil and gasoline to clean it up the drain it again and put in some synthetic gear oil.

What's the deal with the shifter? Has it been removed or just cut off at the shifter cup?

I looks like it was cut off, but I have the shifter from the old 2300 that I had that was rusted out and I just put it in and it works . It is a 4 speed, all the gears are smooth and the bearings feel healthy and nice. There was more water than I thought, but the rust inside isnt bad at all and the gears I could see look dirty but not rusted away. tractor - 2003 heavily modified Murray Off-road tractor - Page 11 20180453

Yummy?!?!?!

It's a pretty easy transaxle to bust apart and wire wheel the internals back clean. I had to do that for the Kal project I am working on.

Well the hubs are the biggest issue. They are cast iron and the shafts are steel. Not wanting to break them. I think I will leave it together.

Well I already busted the fnr. Apparently it didn't like something I did to it and forward doesn't work now. But it still drifts I reverse !!!!! Lol I flew off of it once or twice and had it up on two wheels for awhile , pretty sketchy but fun.

Took it apart and found put the forward gear fused to the shaft from lack of grease , so I got it off and cleaned the burs off and filled it up with gear oil. Now it drives again and I went mudding on it and learned that seatless is hard on your butt. Still had alot of fun tho, was very dirty but happy. tractor - 2003 heavily modified Murray Off-road tractor - Page 11 20180475 my new bud has a spicer for me to put in this thing eventually. So it's not getting retired yet lol. Might remove the Murray fenders and hood and swap on some mtd fenders and hood.

I like the Murray hood and fenders. The spicer will do great, just oil swap it first.

Love the look of mtd hoods. Dunno if I’d mess with swapping the fenders. The footboards and fenders are all separate pieces on an MTD whereas they’re all one piece on the Murray

On my simplicity shifting is a bit hard. That's not a 2300 but it's a normal gear type of deal. I can shift that on the fly not too bad, except 3rd to 4th is tough. But I think that's because the jackshaft doesn't slow down enough. Old cars with non syncromesh transmissions were the same kinda thing I would assume. Small amount of grinding here and there is unavoidable but also the nature of it.

Glad you got forward working. What kind of speed you getting with it?

I'm with CQ, I like the mtd hood. The one like Allis's.

The speed is around 9 mph, 11 if I push it way too hard. Sound the tires out on pavement too , pops wheelies if I catch traction . Does pretty good in mud for having turf tires, probably because it's so lightweight and it's locked.

Very nice... My daughter's tractor has an FNR and I was thinking of speeding it up a bit.  I think it would be OK for her.  If you're catching traction and popping wheelies.  I'm pretty certain she will be ok.

Well, I did it finally. The Murray is no more.

Saved all the useful parts and took the rest out back. Time for a new project off roader! Pretty sure the muckraker is going to fill that void.
