Some sort of craftsman... and more!

It looks like the black 5 hp engine is shorter then the red 5 hp engine, when they was in the frame. Are they both the same height when put next to each other?

Oh Ohh Ohhhh... I see whats going on. I had to look closer, but there is a 1in spacer under the orange one. I dont think it was sitting flat on the mounting plate because of the tank.

Did they make tall and short block engines?

So I made this belt guide for my st/10. There is supposed to be a guide thats bolts to the transaxle... I forgot to bolt it on, before I started putting this thing together. Itd be a pain to disassemble and bolt the proper unit on soooo....



This is going to be a grass cutter, but Im not sure quite how the deck mounts... this thing might interfere I dont know... lol

Yah, Briggs made tall and short deck 5 hp motors. The short deck ones are on the push mowers and are vertical shaft engines, that I've built up. But never really seen a short deck 5 hp with a horizontal shaft yet.

The engine block with a short deck means the piston while going up and down in the cylinder, will be moving faster, in turn gives more torque. Because the piston rod is shorter.

So still not much going with the "craftman thing"... its in the grass... err... weeds...

..but I did get some front wheels and tires for it!

The craftsman will be more hotrod-esque... this new thing... kinda dirt racer hotrod-esuqe-ness? I mean... technically they would be "off road" units...

So first thing I did was booger weld this brace in better. Im not sure if its in the way or not... but it aint moving now!



Here is, more or less how the dash, and gas tank will sit.



Ill need to trim the dash to fit the gas tank more better.



And heres where I hit my first snag... In order to clear the frame, and to get the axle sprocket in the center of this contraption...

Yes. If all goes well, it will go back under the floor board then out the side.

So I guess if I flip my frame around I wont have clearance issues... Ide still have to run a jackshaft to get the chain in the center... but thats too much work.

yeah, its gona be pretty low I think. It will need a skid plate.

As for speed... Im not sure, either something reasonable... 20-25?, or Im gona do something silly and gear it high... 30-35... 45...

I think I like the idea of 25-ish.

Yeah, a skidplate or two would be a good idea. Are you gonna change the shape of the shifter? Looks like it would hit the steering wheel maybe.

Oh yeah, it would hit the dash as it is now. Ill either bend it so it doesnt hit, or possibly just make one.

I have one of those gearboxes, it has a plate bolted to the side of it that holds the shifter 90* to the left so you can actually shift it easily. Has a stripped gear tho so I can't use it.

Anyone know of anyone running a centrifugal clutch on their vertical shaft engines? I am concerned I might not have much room under this thing...

I know there will be a bit more wear and tear on the clutch, but thats ok.


Ill still try to build a clutch in there... I just dont want a bunch of stuff hanging down under it... its going to be low enough as it is now.

Ive considered trying a torque converter setup... you would be hard pressed finding a centrifugal clutch that will hold up to the HP and stresses in a lawnmower I think ( I think Thunder Divine put TC in his 90mph mini deere)
