Project time! 1966 Cub Cadet 123 Hydro - TURBO DIESEL

Thats not good lol not sure there would be a good way to mount it might have to make a adapter or something

Got to work on it for a bit tonight. Pulled the pull start off the diesel and modified the flange from the Kohler to bolt onto the Diesel.

Bored out the hole on the flange using a step bit.

Here is the diesel without a pull start.







Put a stud in the flywheel to act as a keyway for the flange.

thats going to be awesome and what direction do the kohler engines turn i can't remember. and i have a cub and i never checked lol. And once i put a motor in a cub not remembering kohlers turn the opposite way and i had 3 speeds reverse and 1 speed forward it was hilarious i almost wanted to turn the seat around and drive it backwards.   

They turn clockwise, if my brain is working right.

They all turn the same way. The way cub transmission needs to turn the shaft has to mount to the flywheel side.

Well we passed the point of no return tonight. The tractor is officially ruined from this point forward.

I cut the frame, big time.





Motor is STILL too tall.



Driveshaft angles up.



Trying to clear the hood is a complete joke.





Going to go to tractor supply and try to get some u-joints and PTO shaft to make a new driveshaft that can angle to adjust for the height difference. Going to have to widen and reinforce the frame, which I expected.

The hood will have to be "notched" on the driver's side. It's fine on the passenger because that muffler is coming off when the turbo goes on.

I wouldn't notch the hood I would just put two cuts on each side and bend it up and put pieces of sheet metal on each side to fill the gap if you know what im saying.

Raise the hood to that height.

Or raise it to half that height, and you don't have to notch as much.

I don't think it would look terrible, notched, anyway.

Take the fuel tank off and mount it under the front of the hood then you'll have clearance Clarence

yeah i wouldn't notch the hood i would sooner run no hood then ruin a perfectly good one. but its your tractor you can do what you want.

maybe mount the tank on the front top of the engine (?) You'll figure that out. id hate to see the hood cut, original look is sweet.

Turbo is going there, but I will see if there is room anywhere else to relocate it

Worked on it a bit today after a trip to Harbor Freight.

Started widening the frame using 1/4'' angle iron I had and pieces of the original frame that I cut out (waste not want not). One side is done, now the other side.







Clearance for the regulator and oil fill.



Now the other side. Looks like the steering draglink may be in the way.

doesn't appear to be in the way. If it is, you could bend it or put a drop in it or relocate the arm on the spindle.

Made up the other side of the frame. Welds turned up better through the thick 1/4'' metal. The other side I was using an extension cord not thinking. Cord was getting real hot, so I wasn't getting the power I should have.



Still might add some more bracing. The side I did tonight had to be heavily notched for the oil drain/filter and steering draglink.

Here is the driveshaft goodness. I forgot to take a picture of it out of the tractor, and I wasn't removing it again. It's in the video though. It's made from steering U-joints from a Toyota Four Runner and the stock Cub shaft.

Been a while, but finally had time to work on it again.

Started painting tonight. Should be less ***** looking next time everyone sees it!

Sweet, Can't wait! when is the turbo gonna be installed?

I'm waiting until all the fab is done getting the motor to fit. Then once I see where I have room, I'll mock up the turbo.
