PostSubject: Sarge offroad/mud mower    Sarge offroad/mud mower Icon_minitimeMay 18th 2013, 7:45 pm

well here is sarge i finally got the time to take some pics and show my front shocks and tires i did have 23" mudlites on the rear but my little brother wanted them back lol he things he can fix his atv that has a cracked head

ok so lets see i got the mower from my dad he bought it back in 2006 it is a poulan with a Dana spicer 4360-139 it is a tough transaxle it has broken on me a few times but nothen big it had a 15.5 briggs OHV with AVS well about a few months ago i was jumping his and having a great time the engine had a JB-weld patch to stop the oil leak and i started to show off and i decided to kill the engine i held down the throttle and blew a counter weight out the back of the engine block the only mods to this engine was a custom camshaft i mad wasnt a great camshaft but it did give me some more power well i started to part the engine out and sold the daul strait pipes i made for it got $75 for that and sold the head for $25 i had $100 to buy a new engine i started to search on CL for a nice V-twin or a opposed twin i never found a engine on CL i remembered that my neighbor had a yard full of mowers he collected over the years well me and him talked it over had a smoke and had a few beers with him and we walked threw his mowers and he just gave me 2 60's snappers for free they where in the woods for over 9 years then i seen 2 MTD's along the woods line i asked him about them he told me they where crap he wanted $350 for both well i made a deal i buy him a 6 pack and he drops the price to $100 he took the deal i opend the hood and i was amazed i just bought 2 Opposed twin B&S engines one is a 17hp needs some work the other is a 20.5 Opposed twin with the 46CI block ive sunk alot of cash into the engine i had a cam made i had it bored .30 over bigger carb jets ported and polished did have the heads shaved but it didnt run like i wanted it to well J* sent me to a guy on youtube who knows his engines he told me opposed twins dont like shaved heads so i took the other heads off the 17hp and put them on the 20.5hp it ran alot better then i thought well i made a 3 stage muffler system 1" to a 2" to a 3 1/2" out the side under the foot boards well enough talking here are some pics

Well if i wanted to use that opposed twin it was time for some modding so i could use my hood the engine was alot bigger then i thought so i had to cut the hood mounts and raise the hood up about 2"
Sarge offroad/mud mower Img_2010

here are what the hood mounts look like sorry for the ugly welds Razz
Sarge offroad/mud mower Img_2011

here is another shot of the hood mounts please ignore my ugly toes XD
Sarge offroad/mud mower Img_2012

ok here is how i got my shocks mounted the tubing is 1" with 5/8 bolts to mount the shocks on
Sarge offroad/mud mower Img_2013

i got the 1" tubing welded to the frame and i will make more bracing so the shocks wont snap off
Sarge offroad/mud mower Img_2014

ok so i got the bolt welded to the axle it is also a 5/8 the shocks are from my van its a 1994 chevy G20 sportsvan the shocks still got life in them but i had to upgrade them if i wanted to pull my camper so i used the old shocks on the mower Very Happy
Sarge offroad/mud mower Img_2015

here are the shock towers and i do plan on taking 1/2" tubing and eather maxing a xbrace or just go strait across with it to make them stronger
Sarge offroad/mud mower Img_2016
Sarge offroad/mud mower Img_2017

here is the 1" pipe that is coming from the head then it leads to a 2" and then a 3 1/2" pipe yea my welds arnt so beautiful but they will hold i need to grind the welds down or i may just put so header wrap on it just depends you can see how i got my brakes hooked up and my pedals there is no throttle cable YET
Sarge offroad/mud mower Img_2018
Sarge offroad/mud mower Img_2019
Sarge offroad/mud mower Img_2020
Sarge offroad/mud mower Img_2021

here is my atv rack its just a old bed frame i cut up and my keyswitch is messed up so i hooked a chain up and welded it to a bolt so my key can fall out but wont fall off the mower ive lost a few keys and this was just a cheap DIY fix because im to lazy to buy a new switch and wire it up lol
Sarge offroad/mud mower Img_2022
Sarge offroad/mud mower Img_2023
Sarge offroad/mud mower Img_2024

this mower used to get sunk daily at a pond and my belt used to slip alot so i rigged up a bigger clutch spring and brake spring also you can see the idler pulley i put to keep the belt from slipping
Sarge offroad/mud mower Img_2025
Sarge offroad/mud mower Img_2026

i will give yall updates when something changes

Looks like a pretty good start! If I may make a humble suggestion regarding your welds- You need more heat. Turn that sucker up, and slow your hand down some to concentrate the heat. What kind of welder are you using?

That's just it. How they look tends to be a pretty good indicator of the integrity of the weld. Sure, for something like exhaust, hell- its only pipe. But if its something that your @ss depends on, well- that's different.

Look for a sanding disc for your grinder. They work great for cleaning up welds.

Well, like I said. Depends on the situation. I've built a couple of trailers, and if what I have built is to be hauled at 75MPH on a public freeway, I'm gonna make sure they're burnt in but good.

i had a lincon 220 welder but sold it so i could get some stuff fixed around my camper im using a cheap little welder that has a low and high switch for power and a low/high switch for voltage

I like the creativity of the bed rack, and the go kart pedals are a nice touch.

if you do just make sure the shocks are semi dead so they wont break any thing lol i tried some new shocks i got for my van on the mower and i could barley compress them but i got them on there and there was no flex in the axle it was like it was locked lol
