4 wire's? Depends if its magneto or so also. All it does is counting sparks to the plug so to say, so one wire needs negative coil info. But there are soo many types.

Indeed there are loads of different types your can get, some use a Hall effect sensor and counts the magnet on the flywheel, others the EMF current in the spark cable and counts the rpm that way.

I got a regular tach for a v8 it changes from v8, v6, v4 If u get a tach like this, Wire your green wire to your kill switch if your running your own electrical system, if not wrap it around the spark plug, The red wire is for the positive side of battery, the black is negative, and the white wire is for the light, could run a switch, its optional to run the white wire.
