THE BLUE MTD

i got this blue mtd mower. ill post picks as soon as i can. it had a 14.5 ohv briggs on her, but its locked up. i took the oil sump off and the inside looked like the titanic! so im just goin to get another briggs. probably a flathead. stay tuned fr more!

Older MTD's came with flatheads, pretty much anything after 2000 came with OHV motors - should give you the age of the tractor.

this is like a 1994 its actually a mtd yard machines. im going to get a pick of it this weekend

give me some ideas on what kind of engine i should get. briggs and stratton terms.

Id say a good reliable briggs motor is anything they made bigger than 10hp. I would myself go with a 14.5 hp briggs i/c gold motor i hear theyre strong and real reliable

V twins for power, flatheads for reliability, and an HIV for valve tran play

I have a V Intek Briggs and its great. Runs nice and strong.

Flatheads are pretty much bulletproof too.

Personally, i prefer the flathead motors - stock they make decent power and need basic maintence - OHV motors tend to need valve adjustments every so often, carbs cant be adjusted.

Actually i have like 7 OHV motors in my shed - i just like to run flatheads better tho.

Flathead twins are powerful, and long lasting .

i have lots of different options for engines, there all around braymer! i was think about a single cylynder, but my friend has a opposed 2 cylinder 20hp briggs and stratton. i have a v twin kohler on my husky at moms, but i have never ran a twin briggs and stratton. are they as good as the single cylinder briggs?

Twin opposed briggs motors are strong and good running/long lasting motors - the proof?

Well, i have an ' 86 GTII craftsman - it was a rusty POS, then found out the 18HP twin opposed horizontal shaft briggs motor was full to the top of the carb with rusty, nasty water.

Not sure wether itd be ok, i figured what the heck - i pulled the carb, pulled the intake, took both heads off, cleaned everything and used plenty of PB blaster , and even left the old plugs in after cleaning them.

That nasty, rusty old motor that sat outside for probably years, coughed a couple times then after a bit more gas it coughed and roared to life .

That was a few years ago - it still runs good, starts right up and still has the original plugs it came with - never changed em.

Keep in mind - this motor is 27 years old and block has never been opened .......

All my opposed twins are old - 99 is the newest ( last year of the opposed - after 2000 they went to V twins).

tomorow im going to have some picks up of ole blue and whats left of the engine. im kind of leaning towards the twin briggs. might try tht.

i have a briggs 17.5 avs ohv on my 30mph mudder and it kicks. its got a lot of power too

my opposed twin i have on sarge was from a MTD that was bought new in 96 then somewhere around 98  the guy bought a john deer after the varidrive started to burn belts well it sat from 98 all out in the rain with mud and water all in the intake when i got them i noticed that the throttle was shut and choke was closed there was a little water in the intake no mud so i just threw gas in there after i checked the oil turned it over and started right up and after 5mins of letting it warm up i reved the snot out of that oppy 4800 rpm to 5000rpm this oppy wouldnt die it passed my rev test come to find out it had new rods rings headgaskets rear gasket and sumpgaskets but i still had to take it apart to clean the old oil out and now this motor has gone from a 21.5hp stock to a 35-40hp monster i can pop a wheelie in 5th just rolling at a little under half throttle and these motors have so much toruqe that when i floor it from that rolling start that i can just pop a wheelie and hold it ima stop rambling lol but those flathead opposed twins and the single flatheads are by far the best engines briggs ever made

I have a 12hp flathead and its been stalled in water twice and rolled prob 6 or 7 times after a brief starting fluid spray within 10-15 minutes I can get her started after some crack and pops she purrs like a lion lol

the flatheads are my favorite mower engines, never blown one up yet.

While Briggs is NOT my first choice (personal preference) I think the pre-EPA L-heads are the best. Dead nuts reliable, fully adjustable carbs. Single or oppy twin, your choice! If you were comparing a flatty and a twin of similar displacement, choose the single for greater reliability (less parts) or the twin for more low-end torque.
