| Pulley swapping on a hydro isn,t a good idea, all it does is spin the pump faster leading to burning it up faster. The little bit of power gained by increasing pump pressure isn.t worth the failure rate. If the hydro is good you can sell it for more than the cost of a gear trans and make the swap to a gear trans, then pulley swap it. | |

| Price would depend on the tractor, just do a search on E-bay and you should get a good ball park figure. As far as a clutch, check out posts by FearlessFront, he has done a nice clutch set up. I would post a link but I haven't figured that out yet. | |

| 1 inch won't make that much difference, you should be okay for a while. You need to keep in mind that you won't gain any real speed, pulley swapping a hydro doesn't really affect gear ratio. | |

| Bigger rear tires will help with speed a little. | |

| i already have 22x11x8s on it but on stock rims there more like 23 or 24x9.50x8 and still only go like 5mph | |

| I have an extra hydro transaxle and was thinking about this topic. Since the transaxle is basically a pump, you can't speed it up on the engine side. Some have mentioned larger tires as a way of changing the final ratio and going faster, but also mentioned, it doesn't change enough. What about gearing off the axle shafts of the transaxle to a solid gokart axle? You could use sprockets and chain to increase speed while the transaxle will still be turning at the stock speed. This would also take a lot of stress off of the transaxle since most of the stress would be on the 1" or larger kart axle and bearings. | |

| I wonder if anyone has opened a hydro, how hard would a internal gear change be? I know there are a lot of hydros out there that would benefit from more speed. I myself have a Yamaha hydro tractor that is slow. | |

w. I have and I regret it to this day. Springs and shit EVERYWHERE. I don't know how they put that thing together at the factory but I sure couldn't.

| Only way to make a hydro faster is to mess with the linkages - on my 99 hydro murray its already a near 1:1 ratio - small motor pulley ( 4"? ) and a small trans pulley ( 3-4" ) - its totally stock that way .
I have to say with the original 17HP twin briggs - it moves around pretty good .
If you dont have a welder, you could find a local guy that welds - just fab it all up, make a drawing and he can weld it for a nominal price.
When i dragged my 82 dynamark down here, somehow the front deck bracket cracked - i removed the bracket, then looked in the phone book for a welding shop nearby( about 5 mins down the street) - took 10 minutes and $5 to weld it - i gave him $15 , was worth it ( needed the yard mowed ).
He also had a couple old lawn tractors there i ended up buying - so scored on both counts.

On some tractors you can use the same clutch that worked with the hydro. That is how my simplicity is.
